Spain in Winter: Getting Away from the Cold

One tends to think that Spain is a country where it’s always sunny, warm and dry. But the climate in Spain in winter, and also during other seasons, is very varied. Depending on the proximity of the sea, the situation in the north or the south of the country, or the position in relation to a mountain range (it will surprize many to hear that Spain is the second most mountainous country of Europe, only after Switzerland, but more on that in another chapter), the weather can be mild and relatively dry or cold and relatively humid, even with snowfall.

So that you can get an idea of the complexity of the Spanish climates, here is a map that distinguishes up to 12 different climate zones on the Iberian Peninsula:

The Weather in Spain in Winter:

There is a wide range of temperatures in different areas of Spain. On the following map you can see average temperatures during the month of January (the orange zones are the warmest and the blue ones the coldest):

temperaturas medias en enero

As you can see, the most pleasant temperatures are to be found on the Canary Islands, off the coast of Africa, followed by the southern Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts (from Huelva to Valencia).

Where to enjoy soft and dry winters:

Nowhere in Spain is it really warm in winter. On the Canary Islands, daytime temperatures are between 20-25ºC with night time temperatures of around 15ºC. But on mainland Spain there is no region where it will be much warmer than 15-20ºC during the day and 10-15ºC at night. These are the temperatures you can find on the southern Mediterranean (Gibraltar, Malaga, Almeria, Murcia, Alicante and Valencia), and on the soutern Atlantic coast (Huelva and Cadiz), although in this latter case the air may feel somewhat colder due to higher humidity in the air and stronger winds. On the Atlantic coast there is also a slightly higher risk of rain.

Where to enjoy a relatively mild winter in Spain:

On the remaining coastal areas (Barcelona and the Costa Brava, Balearic Islands and the north coast) winters are also relatively agreeable, with daytime temperatures of 10-15ºC and night temperatures that are not much colder. And even though it may rain occasionally, it does not do so frequently.
